Resilience Building or Community Building?

 What’s the Difference?

I’ve been so busy lately that when someone asked me recently what the difference was between resilience building and community building, I turned to Chat GPT! I felt comfortable doing this, as I’d already had this conversation with Chat GPT. This was the response.

“The Key Difference Between Resilience Building and Community Building lies in their focus and goals:

  • Community Building: This is about creating strong, supportive networks where people connect, share, and collaborate. It focuses on fostering relationships, trust, and cooperation within a group. The goal is to establish a sense of belonging, shared identity, and collective strength.
  • Resilience Building: Resilience is more focused on preparing for and adapting to challenges. It involves developing the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, whether they’re personal, societal, or environmental. Resilience building emphasizes equipping individuals or communities with the skills, resources, and mindset needed to cope with adversity.

While community building often lays the foundation for resilience, resilience building focuses more on the ability to withstand and bounce back from crises. In your case, community building would involve creating strong relationships and support networks, which naturally helps in enhancing the overall resilience of the group.”

Kalliergo Community Building Programs

No matter how strong we are, little in life is more painful than dealing with crisis, loss, or tragedy alone. We need community as we need oxygen. In our ruggedly individualized society, we’ve lost touch with this innate need to the extent that most don’t even realize what’s missing.

A genuine community is the perfect starting place for developing resilience organically. Through the dynamic of authentic relationships and the safe space a community provides, community building lays the foundation for resilience to grow.
